AI photo booths: gimmick or real revolution?
“AI” photo booths are arriving on the events market: backgrounds generated on demand, stylised avatars, faces transposed into unlikely settings. Guaranteed impact… in the demo. Before you hire, here is what AI really brings, what it costs in constraints, and the questions to ask the hire company.
What AI can do on a photo booth
- Generative backgrounds: the guest picks “beach at sunset” or “the Roaring Twenties” and the AI replaces the backdrop without a green screen
- Avatars and styles: the photo becomes an illustration, a painting, an animated film character
- Face swap: the guest’s face is placed into a predefined scene or character
- Automatic retouching: smoothed skin, corrected lighting, with no manual work
On paper, it is spectacular. In practice, three questions separate the gimmick from the good idea.
Question 1: what about GDPR?
This is THE issue, especially for corporate events. A face photo processed by AI usually goes through third-party servers, sometimes outside Europe. Before you hire, insist on precise answers:
- Where are the photos sent, and who keeps them?
- Are the faces used to train models?
- Is guests’ consent obtained, and how?
- How long are the images stored?
A serious hire company has these answers. Vagueness on this point, at a corporate event, can turn into a legal incident.
Question 2: what about the connection?
Generative AI runs in the cloud: no fast connection, no AI effect. Yet event venues (village halls, wedding estates, exhibition halls) are precisely the places where the network is least reliable. A booth whose main selling point needs Wi-Fi, in a venue that has none, becomes a broken booth. (Why working without Wi-Fi is essential →)
Question 3: and what about the photo?
The paradox of AI effects: once the surprise wears off, what guests really want is a great photo of themselves, together, printed. The cyborg avatar is fun once; the group photo in its personalised frame ends up on the fridge for years. Check that the booth is first and foremost a good photo booth: real print quality (dye-sublimation), simple triggering, and enough prints included.
Our position at Badabooth
We are testing these technologies closely, and we will only add an AI feature once it passes three tests: working without relying on your venue’s Wi-Fi, respecting your guests’ privacy unambiguously, and taking nothing away from the quality of the printed photo. In the meantime, our booths do what you expect from them on the day: great photos, printed in a few seconds, with a frame personalised for your event, and no connection required.
